The water trough is in the mineral program
Water can supply sulfur, sodium, chloride, iron, and other minerals every time the cow drinks.

High-producing cows drink large volumes, so a modest concentration in water can become meaningful daily exposure. Feed-only mineral maps miss sulfur load, iron antagonism, salinity, and wells that change with season or treatment. Water is not nutritionally empty just because it has no CP line.
Penn State’s drinking-water guide treats a water test as part of the herd mineral and intake story, not as a side curiosity. Sample the source cows actually drink. Add water contribution to the total mineral map. The useful habit is to test and calculate the water when feed minerals do not explain exposure.
Check in the barn
What to check: Has the drinking source been tested — the trough line, not only the house well? Do summer and winter sources differ? Are sulfur, sodium, chloride, and iron on the report? Pair the water test with the feed mineral sum before you blame the premix.

The heat-stress universe’s water-space-is-a-ration-ingredient and water-is-the-third-letter-in-saw notes pick up access and cooling; this note is the chemistry in the same trough. Educational only — not a diagnosis, prescription, or ration formula.

A number without a unit is not a result
Percent, ppm, mg/kg, Mcal/lb, and Mcal/kg can turn the same digits into very different decisions.

- Water belongs in the mineral mapAn overlooked sourcePlaced here
- Ash is not a mineral panelAsh measures total inorganic residue; it cannot tell whether calcium, potassium, or soil contamination caused the result.Sister note
- Mineral concentration is not daily supplyThe cow receives grams or milligrams per day, not a percentage printed for one ingredient.Sister note
- Heat stressHeat load is temperature plus humidity, not the office thermostat. Penn State: mild heat stress starts near THI 68 — shade, air, then water.Bridge → Barn
