Water can supply sulfur, sodium, chloride, iron, and other minerals every time the cow drinks.

High-producing cows drink large volumes, so a modest concentration in water can become meaningful daily exposure. Feed-only mineral maps miss sulfur load, iron antagonism, salinity, and wells that change with season or treatment. Water is not nutritionally empty just because it has no CP line.
Penn State’s drinking-water guide treats a water test as part of the herd mineral and intake story, not as a side curiosity. Sample the source cows actually drink. Add water contribution to the total mineral map. The useful habit is to test and calculate the water when feed minerals do not explain exposure.
Check in the barn
What to check: Has the drinking source been tested — the trough line, not only the house well? Do summer and winter sources differ? Are sulfur, sodium, chloride, and iron on the report? Pair the water test with the feed mineral sum before you blame the premix.
