The mixer and push-up are part of the ration

Scales, mix time, and bunk push-ups decide whether the printed recipe is what the cow actually eats — empty bunks and drifted loads rewrite the ration.

The mixer and push-up are part of the ration

The nutritionist prints a recipe. The cow eats whatever the mixer delivered and whatever still sits within reach hours later. Precision feeding is not a software brand — it is load-cell honesty, mix discipline, and bunk access treated as technology.

Chassis load cells that are dirty, jammed, or uncalibrated can swing ingredient weights by double-digit percent before anyone notices. Filling past a sensible volume, loading out of order, or grinding long after the last ingredient lands all change particle size — the peNDF story in the overmixing note. Short, consistent post-load mix times protect structure; endless mixing steals it.

Feed that slides out of reach is a silent ration cut. Frequent push-ups — by hand, scraper, or robot — keep meals small and continuous instead of empty-bunk slug feeding that spikes acids and cuts saliva. Empty hours after milking are when subordinate cows lose first.

Watch the bunk for two hours after delivery. Is the face still reachable? Do scales zero cleanly? Does the refusal look like the recipe or like sorted fines? If the pen looks “full” while jaws go quiet or the alley shows grain, believe the bunk before you rewrite the ticket.

Sister notes on this universe cover overmixing that steals the mat; the inside-the-rumen universe covers saliva as the free buffer and read manure before you rewrite the ticket. Educational only—not a diagnosis, prescription, or ration formula.

Sorting steals the peNDF

A correctly mixed TMR can still fail when cows pick fines and leave long forage — the consumed ration loses peNDF even though the ticket looked right.
