The same NDF can describe a different forage
NDF gives cell-wall amount; digestibility, lignin, uNDF, rate, and particle form determine how that wall behaves.

Two forages can print the same NDF and still fill the rumen differently. NDF is cell-wall amount. Digestibility, lignin, undigested NDF, digestion rate, fragility, and chop decide whether that wall leaves room for the next meal or sits as fill.
NASEM and Penn State digestibility work treat in vitro NDF disappearance as a quality signal that must keep its clock. Compare like forage types using NDFD at the same time point, uNDF at the same time point, lignin, and physical form. The practical lesson is that NDF tells the amount of cell wall; the companion tests tell its behavior.

What to check: Are you ranking two forages on NDF alone? Do both NDFD values share an incubation time? Is uNDF labeled 240 hours or some other clock? Walk intake and cud chewing before you call the higher-NDF forage the worse one.
