Camera scores are screening — not diagnoses
Computer-vision gait scores can prioritize cows and track herd trends — useful screening when camera setup is honest, never a veterinary diagnosis on their own.

A camera that watches cows walk can flag who to pull and whether the pen's gait is drifting. That is decision support. It is not a lesion name, a treatment order, or a replacement for a trim chute and a veterinarian.
Computer-vision locomotion or gait scores aim to catch asymmetry, shortened strides, and arched backs at a throughput human locomotion scoring rarely matches. Used well, they shrink the list for barn-first checks and help managers see week-to-week herd trends — the same spirit as rumination alarms and hoof-record codes: pattern first, cow second.
Accuracy moves with camera angle, lighting, occlusion, flooring, breed, speed of walk, and how the model was validated. A score that looks decisive on a clean alley can wobble in a crowded, muddy return lane. Treat odd or sudden scores as prompts to look — not as proof of a named disease.
Pair camera alerts with standing time as the dose, stall and flooring comfort, and coded hoof-trim records. A rising "lame" list with long lock-ups and soft soles is a time-budget and facility story. Ambiguous or deteriorating cows still need direct examination and veterinary assessment.
Walk the camera's view: Is the alley lit and unobstructed? Do cows actually pass single-file where the model expects? How many high scores cleared after a quiet pen walk with no treatment? If the list grows while cows look fine, check placement and validation before rewriting the SOP.
