Walk a row after unit detachment and inspect teat ends, not only the wash routine. Hyperkeratosis records cumulative mechanical stress: mild rings may be normal, while rough or very rough rings warrant investigation of overmilking, liner fit, vacuum stability, preparation timing, and delayed cluster removal.
The teat canal is a key physical and chemical barrier, and post-milking closure leaves a temporary vulnerability to environmental pathogens. Post-milking teat disinfection remains essential, but it cannot replace an intact physical barrier.
The NMC program prioritizes both effective teat disinfection and properly functioning milking equipment.
