SARA is not grain overload

Acute grain overload is an emergency. Sick or down cows, a dramatic night, call the vet.

SARA is not that. It is a slower pH depression high herds live with for weeks while cows still milk. Fat slips, fiber digestion softens, and hoof integrity can fail later — without a single down cow to announce it. Hours of low rumen pH and a component shift look nothing like acute acidosis, and treating SARA as an ER checklist misses the reopenable diagnostic work: bunk, meal pattern, peNDF, and the tank-and-alley pairing.

Teach the difference. When the cow is down or crashing, that is veterinary emergency care. When the parlor looks busy and the herd is quietly losing fat and chewing, that is SARA — chronic, almost normal, and worth working before you rewrite the wrong thing.
