SARA is not grain overload
Acute acidosis is an emergency. SARA is a chronic, almost-normal herd pattern that can quietly cost milk fat and fiber digestion, and it is associated with poorer claw health.

Acute grain overload is an emergency. Sick or down cows, a dramatic night, call the vet.
SARA is not that. It is a slower pH depression high herds live with for weeks while cows still milk. Fat slips and fiber digestion softens without a single down cow to announce it. Herds with SARA trouble also tend to see more claw-horn lesions, but that link is an association with many co-factors, not proof that low pH damaged the feet. Hours of low rumen pH and a component shift look nothing like acute acidosis, and treating SARA as an ER checklist misses the reopenable diagnostic work: bunk, meal pattern, peNDF, and the tank-and-alley pairing.
Teach the difference. When the cow is down or crashing, that is veterinary emergency care. When the parlor looks busy and the herd is quietly losing fat and chewing, SARA is a likely suspect: chronic, almost normal, and worth working up before you rewrite the wrong thing.

Milk fat depression starts in the rumen
High starch and unsaturated fat with weak effective fiber can shift biohydrogenation toward trans-10 intermediates that suppress mammary fat synthesis.
