NFC commonly includes starch, sugars, organic acids, pectins, and other material not assigned to NDF, CP, fat, or ash. Because it is calculated by difference, a change in ash, fat, or NDF can move NFC even when starch is stable. The starch line is a measurement. The NFC line is a basket.

NASEM and laboratory result keys keep those jobs apart. Use a starch analysis when the question is starch. Use NFC as a broader calculated fraction and read the laboratory equation before you compare reports. Do not treat the NFC line as a starch test.

Check in the barn

What to check: Which line was quoted in the barn meeting — starch or NFC? Did ash or NDF move in a way that would drag NFC by difference? Are you comparing two laboratories that use the same NFC equation? If the worry is kernel processing or fecal starch, you need the starch test.
