A concentrated mineral in a low-inclusion feed may contribute less daily mass than a modest concentration in a major forage. The cow does not eat a percentage. She eats dry-matter intake times concentration, summed across every feed, supplement, and relevant water source.
NASEM requirements are daily supplies, not one-ingredient headlines. Convert concentration to daily intake before judging mineral supply. After you have grams or milligrams per day, keep bioavailability, chemical form, antagonists, and production stage in a separate column. Do not treat a forage mineral percentage as the herd’s mineral program.
Check in the barn
What to check: Did someone quote a forage calcium or sulfur percentage without multiplying by intake? Are supplements and water in the same sum? Is the argument about concentration, daily mass, or absorbable supply? Write the unit on the whiteboard before the decision.
