Milk fat first, then manure

SARA rarely shows up as a down cow. The tank and the alley often move first while the parlor still looks busy.

A sliding bulk-tank fat test paired with loose or foamy manure is the early warning. Fat alone is not SARA — dietary fat changes, oleic load, or sampling noise can move the tank. Manure alone is not SARA — protein, salt, or infection can loosen the alley. When both move together, and especially when fewer resting cows are cud-chewing, put the rumen first as the working hypothesis.

Walk the fresh group and the high group the same morning. Fresh cows are still adapting papillae; high cows carry the biggest starch load. Note whether the cows with loose manure are the same ones sorting the bunk. Confirm the trend across days before you reformulate — a one-day wobble is not a ration rewrite.
