Escape protein still has to digest
RUP describes rumen escape, not guaranteed intestinal absorption.

Rumen-undegradable protein is the fraction that avoids rumen degradation. That is a location claim, not an absorption claim. The small intestine can use only the digestible portion. Heat can raise apparent escape while locking part of the protein behind Maillard products the cow cannot use.
NASEM metabolizable protein is microbial protein plus digestible RUP. Pair the RUP line with intestinal digestibility and heat-damage markers such as ADICP, then judge the complete diet. RUP is rumen escape — not a guarantee of intestinal absorption.
Check in the barn
What to check: Is the conversation about “more bypass” or about digestible undegraded protein? Did the feed heat in storage? Is ADICP or an adjusted-protein line on the same report? Do not treat a higher RUP number as automatically more usable protein.
