Empty bunks are starch events

An empty bunk is not just missed dry matter. It is a behavioral starch event.

When cows wait at a bare bunk, then rush the fresh TMR, meal pattern rewrites rumen chemistry even when the printed diet never changed. Gorging compresses a day’s fermentable load into fewer, faster meals. Eating rate rises; chewing time per kilogram falls; salivary bicarbonate per gram of dry matter collapses. Dominant cows often get first pick of the fine, starchy fraction while longer peNDF is left behind. Acid production outruns saliva before the mat and cud cycle can catch up.

That is one reason SARA and milk-fat trouble can show up with a “perfect” formula on paper. Delivery timing and empty hours may be the problem, not the ration sheet. Treat push-up and delivery windows as part of the SARA workup. Watch the first thirty minutes after feed hits the bunk: slug speed, sorting at the starchy end, and how long subordinate cows wait before they eat.

Field habits that catch it early: track empty-bunk hours around parlor return, keep refusals in a band that never lets the bunk go bone-dry, check same-day cud on resting cows, and use fecal particle size when undigested grain and oversized fiber show up after a slug meal.

Educational only — not a diagnosis, prescription, or ration formula.

Milk fat first, then manure

SARA rarely announces itself with a down cow. The tank and the alley move while the parlor still looks busy.
